Rolls-Royce is working on a project to build a nuclear reactor on the moon. The project is funded by the UK Space Agency. UK Space Agency announced this on its Twitter.

The microreactor will support the future base on the Earth’s satellite. £2.9bn investment is in addition to the £249,000 already received by Rolls-Royce. for research.

The project envisages the creation of a small nuclear reactor that will operate regardless of the presence of sunlight and location. Transportation of the reactor to the moon is scheduled for 2029.

In February, British companies received £51 million from the UK Space Agency. The funding is aimed at creating communications and navigation systems for future lunar missions.

Earlier, Rolls-Royce in cooperation with the UK Space Agency demonstrated its first space project – a model of a nuclear reactor.
