Social X has announced the start of a new experiment to charge $1 per year for “new unverified” users for interacting with posts.

The company said that this test is currently taking place in New Zealand and the Philippines, but existing users will not be affected.

New users will be able to post, like, reply, bookmark, and cite posts for paying this fee. Users who don’t pay $1 will get an account just to read, view posts.

X explained that this update is not a source of profit, but will help reduce spam.

“This new test has been designed to strengthen our already successful efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform, and bot activity while balancing platform accessibility with a small amount of fees. It is not a profit engine,” the company said.

The company said it would share the results of the effectiveness of this implementation.

Earlier, Musk said that X plans to charge users a “small monthly payment.”
