Meta announced the removal of several thousand fake accounts on the Facebook platform that pretended to be American users and tried to form false political views in the United States before the 2024 elections.

“Unknown persons in China have created thousands of fake social media accounts created as belonging to Americans and used them to spread polarizing political content in an apparent attempt to divide the U.S. population ahead of next year’s election,” the AP said.

The network of fake accounts consisted of almost 4.8 thousand accounts. The accounts contained fake photos, names, and locations to look like regular American Facebook users discussing political issues.

At the same time, in order to create the appearance of authenticity, the network disseminated publications from network X, formerly known as Twitter, created by politicians, media and other real users.
