Meta has been disabling a feature that allows you to chat with Instagram friends on Messenger since mid-December. This cross-platform was launched in 2020.

If you already have conversations with Facebook accounts on Instagram, they will become read-only. In addition, Facebook accounts will no longer be able to see your activity status or read receipts.

The reasons are not given, but as 9to5Google suggests, it may be introduced to avoid the consequences of new laws in the EU on digital markets.

Previously, the EU developed the Digital Markets Act, which is designed to deter platform owners from gaining monopoly power. If a company exceeds the revenue threshold and the European Commission deems the platform to be excessively dominant, it may impose a maximum penalty of 10% of the total global turnover for the previous year.
