SpaceX-backed Alef Aeronautics, a California-based startup, said it already has 2,850 pre-orders for its Alef Model A vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL).

For the Model A, Alef Aeronautics plans to charge customers $300,000 – that is, the total value of orders is already $855 million. According to Alef CEO Jim Duchovny, this makes the Model A the best-selling aircraft in history, surpassing even Boeing, Airbus, and Joby Aviation (at least for now). Alef is also working on a four-seater Model Z sedan, which is scheduled to be released by 2035 at a price of $35,000. Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Tesla investors are investing in the development.

For driving on the road, the Alef Model A uses four engines in each of the wheels, for takeoff it has eight propellers at the front and rear, capable of rotating independently at different speeds. The expected cruising speed in the air is 176 km/h, on the road – a modest, but quite acceptable 40-55 km/h. The flying car weighs 385 kg, and its developers hope to get the green light to launch flights as early as 2025.
