The House of Representatives of Congress supported a law according to which the popular Chinese platform TikTok could be banned in the United States. 352 members of the lower house of Congress voted in favor, and only 65 voted against. For the first time, the relevant bill was presented on March 5, 2024, in the House Committee on Energy and Trade, and there it was unanimously supported – 50 votes in favor. Now, after the passage of the law by the House of Representatives, the Senate must also vote for it. However, the results of the vote there may not be so unanimous.

In the bill, which, if supported by the Senate, President Biden has already promised to sign, the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns the TikTok platform, is given 165 days to sell it, or it will simply be banned in the United States, and the application will be removed from the Apple and Google app stores. TikTok has already commented on this legislative initiative as a violation of the rights of 170 million American users of the platform – from a company that is directly subordinate to communist China, hearing such accusations is not that surprising, but in fact quite ironic. Unexpectedly, the ex-president (and possibly the future president) of the United States, Donald Trump, who seems to be very worried about Mark Zuckerberg’s fortune, came to the defense of TikTok. “If you get rid of TikTok, Facebook and Zuckerschmuck will double down on their business,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
