While Ukraine is breaking spears around what to do with the Russian messenger Telegram – to regulate, ban or simply not to touch, the judge of the Supreme Court of Spain, Santiago Pedras, decided to temporarily – but completely – block this platform in the country. The ban is valid for the duration of the investigation, which is being conducted at the request of four Spanish media companies, including Atresmedia.

In their complaint, the media say that Telegram distributes copyrighted content without permission. Spanish mobile operators will be responsible for enforcing the court’s decision; The messenger should be completely blocked from March 25, 2024. There were no additional comments for the media from either representatives of the platform or the Supreme Court. Telegram is the fourth most popular messenger in Spain, it is used by almost 20% of the country’s residents. Its total audience in the world is 700 million active users.
